What I Know For Sure - Journaling Edition

What I Know For Sure - Journaling Edition

I’ve been reading (and enjoying) What I Know for Sure by Oprah Winfrey, and it’s got me reflecting on my own life. What do I actually know for sure? Are these truths unshakable, or do they shift with time and circumstances? Can I defend them? Am I confident enough to say them out loud? So many questions, not nearly enough answers.

But when it comes to journaling, I realize there are a few things I know for sure, at least right now. They might change later, and that’s perfectly fine. For today though, these are my truths:

✍🏽Journaling is a safe space

When I first started journaling, I didn’t really have a “why.” It was something I picked up because it seemed like the thing to do. But with time, my journal has become my safe space - the place I run to whether I’ve had a bad day, a really good one, or just an ordinary one.

The brain dumps have been priceless. On days when I don’t want my thoughts to feel too permanent, I scribble on random sheets of paper and throw them away. I still get the release, without the pressure of 'forever.'

✍🏽I don’t have to journal daily

Yeah, I said it!
Journaling doesn’t have to be a daily ritual to be meaningful. Sure, a routine can help with consistency and unlocking its full benefits, but regular looks different for everyone. Whether it’s daily, weekly, or whenever your thoughts feel heavy, what matters is showing up.

✍🏽Journaling is not only for the hard times

I am guilty of it and I know some of you are as well - reaching for my journal only when life felt heavy. But what happens is that we begin to associate our journals with negativity, which isn’t ideal.

The truth is, journaling goes beyond venting. It’s a space for reflection, clarity, and perspective. Whether you’re processing emotions, setting goals, or just making sense of your day.

Yes, the tough moments belong there, but so do the everyday lessons, random ideas, and small wins. Don’t let your journal become a book of burdens; let it hold your entire journey.

✍🏽Journaling freezes the happy moments

One of my favorite things about journaling is re-reading old entries - especially the joyful ones. It’s like pressing play on a memory. Suddenly, I’m smiling at the small kindness of a waiter who gave me a better seat, or reliving the joy of my wedding day.

My gratitude journal is my go to for this. Each entry is like a time capsule that lets me experience those moments all over again.

✍🏽Journaling is for everyone

Young or old, men or women, students, employees, entrepreneurs, you name it! Journaling is universal. You don’t need to overthink it. Just pick up a journal (lined or dotted), a pen (all black, pastels or glittery) and start.

And if staring at a blank page feels overwhelming, guided journals with prompts (like our Reflection Journal) can help ease you in.

And don’t forget a bookmark to mark your latest entry.

Yes, we literally have all the tools you need, including erasable pens 😁

Before you go…

Those are the things I know for sure about journaling - for today at least. They might evolve with time, but that’s the beauty of the practice: it grows with you.

What about you? What are some of the things you know for sure about journaling? Share your thoughts in the comments - we’d love to hear them!
